Frontal view of Old Trafford
The impending arrival of former Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United is not proving to be as peaceful and popular as that of his Spanish colleague, Pep Guardiola was at Manchester City when it was announced some days back.
Top British tabloids, Daily Mail UK and The Sun UK are reporting that Mourinho’s appointment, rather than unite the club and the players, it is actually tearing everyone apart. The papers in separate reports revealed that Mourinho’s style and some of the decisions he might take is raising concerns over his appointment.
The Sun reports that Players of the club, especially the senior ones are concerned over where one of their own, Ryan Giggs, who is especially popular with the team, would fit in when Mourinho arrives.
Giggs had earlier threatened to leave if he was not made Louis Van Gaal’s replacement when the Dutchman leaves either completing his contract or before. The players are concerned that the impending arrival of Mourinho might see him take this option.
The Sun UK reports that the way things fell apart at Chelsea in the six months after winning the title has set alarm bells ringing among some senior stars who do not want the club to go the way of the Blues.
They are also concerned that Mourinho might effect a major overhaul in the team, leading to mass departures.
Both Daily Mail and The Sun point to Juan Mata as one player that could be at great risk given that he was booted out of Chelsea by Mourinho.
Daily Mail UK is also predicting the exit of Belgian midfielder, Marouane Fellaini because he has failed to deliver appropriately at Old Trafford and will not fit into Mourinho’s plans.
“Fellaini is also on his way out of Old Trafford if United come to a financial agreement with Van Gaal at the end of the season and replace him with Mourinho.
“The Belgium midfielder has failed to make a significant impact at United since his move to the club from Everton in 2013.
“Mourinho will also be given a sizeable pot of money to make the necessary adjustments to the squad in order for them to compete with Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal next season if he gets the go ahead to take charge,” the tabloid wrote.
The Sun, quoting reports in Spain, revealed that Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes was in London on Wednesday to thrash out a “maze of clauses” with United bigwigs over a three-year £300,000-a-week Old Trafford deal.
