Auto Crash: Ibadan Polytechnic Declares Lecture-Free Week Over Death Of Students


The Management of The Polytechnic Ibadan has declared a lecture-free week to mourn the untimely death of six people from its Department of Quantity Surveying in a fatal auto crash on Monday evening along Lagos/Ibadan expressway way.

This was disclosed by the Rector of the institution, Professor Olatunde Fawole, on Tuesday as a mark of respect for the six students who lost their lives and the 13 injured students and staff of the Institution.
According to reports, the six victims were identified as four students and two members of staff. The team’s 18-passenger bus conveying the students and some staff of the institution were coming from Oyo where they had gone for a naming ceremony for a member of staff of the department. One of the tyre of the bus was reported to had blown off at Motunde, near Moniya at about 6:00p.m.

The spokesman of Oyo State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident, said: “The bus somersaulted and hit a road median, adding that six persons died on the spot while 13 others were injured. The injured persons were taken to the General Hospital, Oyo and St Patrick Private Hospital along the Ibadan-Oyo Road, but were later referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan on Monday night. The remains of those that died had been deposited in the mortuary of Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan.”
The Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic Ibadan, Soladoye Adewole, informed journalists that “We have declared lecture-free day throughout the week. We lost six people, all students and staff. That is why the management under the Rector, Professor Olatunde Fawole, directed that the rest of the week should be declared lecture free to mourn them and to also pray for the school community.”
The Head of Public Relations Unit of UCH, Deji Bobade, said 12 persons were rushed to the teaching hospital on Monday night, explaining that seven were treated and discharged on Tuesday morning.
According to him, the remaining five were still at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital. He noted that their condition had been stabilised, but the condition of two among the remaining five was critical because they sustained head injuries in the accident.
